History
Culture Shock Dance Troupe®, a professional hip-hop dance company and youth outreach organization, was founded by Angie Bunch in 1993. Since creating this world-renowned dance phenomenon, she has seen the troupe expand into Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Oakland; Chicago; Atlanta; New York; Washington, D.C.; Ottawa; Toronto; Montreal; and London.
The Chicago troupe was founded by Viola E. Elkins's persistence to Angie Bunch that something like this was needed in the Windy City. The troupe finally officially formed in 1998. These past directors were a part of something that would change Chicago forever; Gloria Quinlan, Pepe Fernandez, Angela Molisson, Laurie Canning, Maria Armsted, Anthony Wolfe, Cathy Lamorena and Viola Elkins.
Culture Shock Programs
Culture Shock Dance Troupe provides a healthy, positive environment for dancers to experience personal growth, teamwork, confidence building, and leadership. The troupe also provides an alleyway for dancers that would like to move into the professional industry and pursue recognition in films, commercials, and music videos. Culture Shock performs annually in festivals, schools, and for corporate parties and private gigs.
Hip Hop Workshop
is a supplementary program to our performances in schools that includes lectures, demos, panelists, and discussion forums about various aspects of hip hop culture as it relates to hip hop dance. This is a way for the audience t get involved and better relate to Culture Shock dancers. Lecture demos provide a "show and tell" way for students to learn about specific dance styles and the name of certain moves. There is also an opportunity for the audience and dancers to have a forum style discussion and address any questions the students may have about hip hop dance in relation to hip hop culture. In the future we would like to be able to offer this workshop at every educational site on our agenda.
We also will be directing Future Shock, an 17 and under shadow of Culture Shock. Future shock also provides a healthy, positive environment for dancers, and because it is targeting the teenage population, also provides an alternative to street life. Future Shock promotes self-confidence and positive body image, provides a large social network of friends and family, and encourages its dancers to turn to Culture Shock dancers as positive role models.
